Dear friends, during this last period the Church in the United States is inviting us to rekindle our faith in the Eucharist, the memorial of the passion, death, resurrection and ascension into heaven of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
But what is a memorial? A memorial is not just a cold and distant memory of an event that happened in history so far ago. Rather, a memorial enables us to make present today the same sacrifice fulfilled by Christ, so we, like the disciples of Jesus, can participate fully in that mystery of our redemption.
The Holy Mass is precisely the participation in the mystery of the Lord, in that Holy Supper celebrated by him for those he loved the most, a mystery which he entrusted to the Church to perpetuate in history and time, ordering the Twelve to “Do this in memory of me” (cf. 1Cor 11:24).
But why go to Mass? Jesus, speaking of the value of our participation in this mystery, underlines the fruit of communion that is life eternal. Jesus says in the Gospel of John «He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood, has eternal life» (Jn 6:54.) By going to Mass, we accept the invitation made by the Church to sit at the table of the Lord and be nourished of Jesus himself, the bread of life descended from heaven by which we live.
I therefore invite you, dear friends, to rediscover the treasure of the Eucharist so that, celebrating the mysteries of the Lord, we may be ready to live with commitment the fruits of the Lord’s presence in our lives.

Queridos hermanos, durante este último periodo la Iglesia en los Estados Unidos nos está invitando a reavivar nuestra fe en la Eucaristía, el memorial de la pasión, muerte, resurrección y ascensión al cielo de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
Pero ¿qué es un memorial? Un memorial no es solo un recuerdo frío y lejano de un evento que aconteció en la historia. Memorial es más bien, el poder hacer presente hoy el mismo sacrificio cumplido por Cristo, de tal forma que, como los discípulos de Jesús, también nosotros podamos participar plenamente de ese misterio que es nuestra redención.
La santa misa es justamente la participación al misterio del Señor, a esa santa cena celebrada por él por los que más amaba, un misterio que encomendó a la Iglesia perpetuar en la historia y en el tiempo, ordenándole a los Doce «Hagan esto en conmemoración mía» (cf. 1Cor 11,24.)
¿Pero por qué ir a misa? Jesús, al hablar del valor de nuestra participación a este misterio, subraya el fruto de la comunión, la vida eterna. Dice Jesús en el evangelio de Juan «El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, tiene vida eterna» (Jn 6,54.) Al ir a misa aceptamos sentarnos en la mesa del Señor y ser nutridos de él mismo, el pan de vida bajado del cielo por el cual vivimos.
Les invito, pues, queridos hermanos, a redescubrir el tesoro de la Eucaristía, para que, celebrando los misterios del Señor, nos dispongamos a vivir con compromiso los frutos de la presencia del Señor en nuestras vidas.
